Remember if you do not take care of your tattoo it will not heal to stay in good condition. The three weeks after you get your tattoo are the determining factors of how it will heal and will make sure you avoid infection.
HOW IT SHOULD LOOK:
A healthy tattoo may be a bit red, raised-up, or itchy when it's healing, scabbing is also normal.
Within an hour or two of receiving the tattoo, wash thoroughly. Put under warm running water or if able, get into the shower. Use mild soap and lather by hand (no washrag or anything abrasive on the skin to exfoliate) when finished, let air dry for a few seconds then pat dry with a clean paper towel.
Apply a thin layer of ointment with the tip of your finger. Do this for 4-5 days. Make sure not to apply too much product as it may suffocate your tattoo and adversely affect your healing. Do this every few hours.
Generally, after the 4th or 5th da, the tattoo may become dry and itchy. At that time you may switch to simple unscented white lotion and apply every few hours for at least 2 weeks or until tattoo is no longer peeling and itchy.
IF IT SCABS, DO NOT TOUCH IT!
AVOID
SWIMMING: especially in dirty water to avoid infections. Even soaking in a tub for a prolonged time period. (showering is fine but any pool or natural body of water is not)
If you have to submerge in a body of water use any reputable brand saniderm to cover it. Then clean it immediately after.
SCRATCHING: peeling, picking, or rubbing your scabs will cause it to reject or entirely fade.
LETTING IT DRY OUT: although there is a method of healing where you leave your tattoo to dry out instead of moisturizing it can cause pain and irritation to the skin so moisturizing is a much more comfortable way to heal it and ensure proper lasting.
SHAVE ON OR NEAR IT: this can cause it to bleed or reject or cause severe pain. PLEASE avoid using any blade around the area until it is properly healed to the point of no scabs.
